Projector Bombing (outdoor projection)
Projector Bombing is a form of Geek Graffiti (using technology to mark public space, but doing quicker, faster or bigger and smarter than before), it involves using data projectors to create giant ephemeral images, words or videos on the side of buildings. Projector bombing could also be called Street Projections, Photon Bombing, electronic graffiti or electronic street art or even Guerrilla projections (although i tend to shy away from the last term due to its alignment with advertising)
Very much inspired by the GRL masterclass I attended in Adelaide in early 2008, I have been organising Street Projection nights since, we find a location and send out an open invitation for people to be involved. In 2008 I called these nights Collaborative Street Projections which was met with great enthusiasm. For me its a form of new media activism. It inspires a sense of community when people gather to make something new, it rewires thinking about computers and self expression and encourages a sense of belonging and ownership of public space.
