VJing (live video art)
VJ LYNCH
I perform under the name VJ Lynch my style is constantly evolving but i could describe my style as maximal memetic mash-ups.. bending and adapting cultural memories for new times.
wikipedia defines VJing as..
“A VJ is a performance artist who creates moving visual art (often video) on large displays or screens, often at events such as concerts, nightclubs and music festivals, and usually in conjunction with other performance art.“
Ive been VJing for a few years now, performing at major music festivals as well as teaching it. I like to describe Vjing as what a DJ is to music a VJ is to Video. Video Performance can also be compared to Jazz due to the large amount of improvisation and collaboration involved.
Ever since my first experience with computers, Ive always been more interested in ephemeral art that computers provide. My first performance being a simple 2 frame animation from the undo redo function on a painting program on a computer in the late 80’s. Even whilst learning video editing at uni I was more interested in scrubbing (scratching) the playhead of the video track than actually editing.
It wasnt until a few years ago however that I finally discovered VJing, a legitimate outlet for this form of play. Since then I have been putting my years of computer “play” to use, performing in small bars to large touring music festivals. I always get a kick out of performing for a crowd and watching their reaction to my ever changing style.

Video Mapping @ the Leedy
July 12th, 2009Lately I have been doing some Video Mapping at the Leederville Hotel, Leederville Western Australia. As you can see in my previous examples video mapping is projecting video art outside the constraints of the square screen, onto an uneven surfaces. By mapping out these extra shapes we can make surfaces come alive.
below are some videos…

AV mixing experiments
June 1st, 2009Ive been experimenting with Live Audio and Video Mixing using Resolume Avenue. Ive been thinking a lot about what an AV performance could be… Its not music and its not cinema either, it can afford to be something entirely different that draws from both practices. Below you will find some of my live experiments mixed from various full length videos.
Vehicle Video Mapping (MX5 & ZX12R)
April 23rd, 2009Below is an old video Dan recently dug up. Its a Video mapping experiment from around a year ago, Daniel mapped his car and I mapped over my motorbike (mazda mx5 & Kawasaki zx12r)
It was great getting Dan involved because he used his 3d modeling skills on his car to get some great effects. This video was shot on a mobile phone, which explains the poor quality… better stuff next time
VJing @ Southbound Festival 2009
February 16th, 20092nd - 3rd January 2009
The Southbound festival is a two day music festival that always seems to sell out. Organisers providing not only awesome amenities for campers that stay overnight but also bring in some amazing international acts.
As part of this festival I was in charge of providing visuals for the performers in the Big Top. With my small crew (Daniel Moller and Brett Cullen) we mixed, filtered and composed striking visuals from multiple camera feeds and motion graphics.
Musical acts unlike other music festivals were quite broad, everything from acoustic and Folk to Electronica and Hip Hop. They were…

ElvisAcid - jailhouse rock
December 12th, 2008From the depths of my evil computer lab I bring you a B&W Elvis video clips, remastered or should I say reverse engineered, as some psychodelic waste land…
ABOVE: this my mutated version
BELOW: The original version which I haven’t touched, don’t be afraid to play both simultaneously
…just experiementing with whats possible in resolume 3 at the moment. And Elvis seemed like a nice kitch figure to play with.
